One of the best ways to make the switch to a natural deodorant a success, is to do an armpit detox. This will show you how.

Armpit Detox 101: How to Transition to Natural Deodorant with a Clay Mask

One of the best ways to make the switch to a natural deodorant a success, is to do an armpit detox. There’s no doubt that switching to a natural deodorant is one of the best things you can do for your health, but the transition can take a little getting used to. After years of using conventional deodorants filled with aluminum and synthetic chemicals, your body may need some time to adjust while it detoxes.

A natural armpit detox using a clay mask is a simple and effective way to speed up this process, drawing out toxins, balancing your skin, and preparing your underarms for your new low-tox routine.

Why Do an Armpit Detox?

I will be upfront and say that switching to a natural deodorant can leave you feeling stinky for a little while. Don’t feel discouraged if you feel like it’s not working simply because of increased odor. Conventional deodorants often work by blocking sweat glands with aluminum, which traps toxins that would otherwise be released naturally. When you switch to a natural deodorant, your body starts releasing these built-up impurities, which can cause temporary odor, increased sweat, or even irritation. Trust me, in terms of your health, this temporary phase will be worth it in the end.

An armpit detox can:

  • Help remove residual chemicals and toxins from years of conventional deodorant use
  • Support your body’s natural detox pathways
  • Help reduce odor during the adjustment period
  • Balance the pH of your skin to create a healthier environment for your underarms
  • Shorten the time it takes for your body to adapt to natural deodorant

How Long Does the Transition Take?

The detox period can vary from person to person. A lot of people notice improvements in as little as 3-7 days, but for some it can take longer for your body to fully adjust. It took me a couple of months of consistent use before I felt like I was completely past this detoxifying stage, but then I had always been a heavy sweater during my lifetime, so I have no idea if that had any effect on it or not. But in general, during this time, consistency and patience are key!

Tips for Armpit Detox Success

  • Start Slow: If you’re new to using clay masks, start with 10-15 minutes and gradually increase the time.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to support your body’s natural detoxification processes.
  • Make a large batch: Increase the recipe size to make a large batch and keep it in an airtight container to make it more convenient to use.
  • Be Consistent: Use the detox mask 2-3 times a week during the first couple of weeks of your natural deodorant transition.
  • Use a Gentle Natural Deodorant: Look for deodorants with skin-nourishing ingredients like coconut oil, baking soda (if your skin tolerates it), and arrowroot powder. If you’d like to make your own, try my favorite DIY deodorant recipe here.
  • Wear Breathable Fabrics: Stick to natural fibers like cotton during the transition to allow your skin to breathe and sweat freely.

What to Expect During the Detox Period

It’s normal to notice more sweat or odor as your body adjusts, but don’t be discouraged. This is simply your body releasing toxins and rebalancing. Over time, you’ll find that you sweat less and experience fewer odor issues as your skin and body adapt to natural deodorant.

A wardrobe featuring neatly folded and hung natural-fiber clothing like cotton and linen helps your body breathe.

As you may notice an increase in odor during the transition, this is the perfect opportunity to go through your wardrobe. Remove any items that are stained or prone to holding onto odors, especially those made from synthetic fibers. Consider replacing them with clothing made from natural, breathable fabrics for added comfort. It’s also a great time to switch to a natural laundry detergent (my favorite brand is Truly Free*) and ensure you’re using non-toxic bath and body products. After all, there’s no sense in detoxing your underarms if you’re just going to reintroduce toxins through your clothing and personal care items.
