Beginner Wig Resources
I am not shy or quiet about my hairloss journey. If people ask me, I will readily tell you that I’m wearing a wig because I want to normalize that hairloss happens to women too, and there are definitely things that you can do about it. Recently, I have had a few people ask me about what to do with their thinning hair, so I thought I would create a post that can be referenced for anyone who this information might bless.

This is a Paula Young Sheer Elite lace front wig from their Couture Collection.
But first, let’s work on our mindset….
Women get their nails done
Makeup
Self tanner
False lashes
Shapewear
Hair extensions
Etc.
Why?
Because it makes them feel good!
So there is NO SHAME in wearing wigs!
If it makes you feel good and brings you joy…
then WEAR THE WIG!
Beginning Hairloss
Ok, now that we have that out of the way…
If your hair is just starting to thin and you haven’t lost too much hair, then you might find the following products helpful:
Hair fibers:
These are fibers you put on your scalp that match your hair color. It helps create an illusion that you have more hair than you do because you don’t see the bare scalp anymore. I like Febron because it is the most natural one that I can find so far. You can also order samples from them to test it out and help you find the right color.
Toppers:
These are smaller hairpieces you place on the crown that blend in with the rest of your hair. These are great for women who are just beginning to have thin hair at the crown and sides. They clip into your real hair so make sure you have enough hair for them to grab on to. Most wig shops will have topper options for you.
Clip In Hairpieces:
You can get things like clip in ponytails or bun pieces to help you style your hair and make it look like you have more than you do. I particularly like my ponytail pieces even though I have to be careful that all my hair gets plastered back and covers my scalp in the right places. Hair fibers can also help hide and fill in any bare spots if you need when styling your hair this way.
I wear this style with a comb instead of a clip because it works better attaching to my thin hair, and I like how this particular style gives me a messy, spunky hair type of look. I’ll try to get a picture of me wearing it and add it when I can.
Where to Find A Wig
If you’re ready to jump into the world of wigs…
Find a Local Wig Shop:
See if you can find a local wig shop near you. Most times you can schedule an appointment to go try on wigs. The first time at my local wig shop was such a blessing because I was able to try on a lot of different wigs in different brands, styles and colors to see what I liked. Plus the staff was very helpful and offered a lot of tips. It took a lot of the fear away from choosing my first wig.
If you are in Southern Utah, then I recommend Creative Wigs. They will even wash and style your wigs for you if you want, for about the same price as you would have spent at the hair salon getting your hair cut.
My first wig was a Raquel Welch Simmer Elite that I bought from a local wig shop. It’s a cute curly wig that can also be found at other online retailers.
Online Wig Shops:
Buyer Beware! Unfortunately there are a lot of scammers out there who prey on women’s insecurities, especially in the wig world. There are a lot of legit places to buy wigs, but here is a short list of vetted and recommended places to purchase wigs online:
Chiquel
(has amazing sales for their FB group members only)
Godivas Secret Wigs
Hair Mama
(mostly human hair wigs)
Paula Young
Wigs . com
WigOutlet . com
(sells discounts on returns from Wigs . com)
WigStudio1
Wig Reviewers:
There are a lot of women who will review and vet wigs and companies. You will see a lot of different styles, and learn how to care for or style different wigs, as well as learn about different companies and where to find good wigs.
You can also search for the name of a wig you are considering and look for reviews of that particular wig as well. This is helpful to see what the wig looks like on different people, or what people think of the wig construction etc. This is super helpful before you shell out any moolah.
Here are a few that I like to follow on Instagram, but you can also find wig reviewers on YouTube as well:

Budget Wigs on Amazon:
Some of my most often worn, everyday wigs that I wear around the house or for quick errands in the car, I have found on Amazon. They are usually cheap enough that I’m willing to take the risk and hope that they are decent wigs. Here are a few of my tried and true from Amazon:
Baseball Hat Wig
This is a baseball hat style wig that has hair attached to it. It is super fast to throw on when I need to get out the door quickly. It’s also great for working out or at the gym. This one is under $10 and is so affordable and cute that I have several of them and have them each styled a different way so that they are ready to plop on and go!
There are a lot of different hat style options on Amazon from baseball hats, newsboy hats, knit beanies for cold weather, and other sun hats so be sure to explore and check them out.

Headband Wig
This is what is called a headband wig by Sapphire Wigs on Amazon. The hairline is designed to be covered up and worn with a headband and the fibers are sewn on in a way that you can pull it up into a ponytail if you want. So this is another great one you could wear to the gym if you didn’t want to wear a hat style wig. I also just throw it under hats and choose this one to wear under my helmet when we take our four wheelers out.
HairCube Wigs
HairCube wigs are another brand on Amazon that several people I know have bought and loved. I haven’t bought one of these yet but I’ve had my eye on them for a while now and wanted to mention them as another budget friendly wig from Amazon that people like.
What To Look For In a Wig
Wig Lingo
There are a couple of things to know about when you’re looking at different wigs, so here is a quick little summary of some of the wig lingo you will come across as you are looking for wigs.
Lace Front: Lace at the front hairline where fibers are handsewn onto the lace. It will give the most natural hairline if you want the wig off your face.
Hard front: Has no lace at the hairline. Best for wigs with bangs or any wig style you won’t wear off your face.
Monofilament top or part: Gives the illusion of a natural part line. The monofilament top is larger and gives you more options of where you want to part the hair. Most wig retailers will show the inside of the cap where you can see how large or where the monofilament is on the wig.
Permatease: Crimping effect at the root of a wig that adds lift or body to the wig but can disguise the part line and doesn’t give an illusion of scalp.
Handtied cap: Each fiber is hand tied. It is more comfortable than a machine wefted cap and looks the most natural.
Machine Wefted: The hair fibers are sewn on into rows. It is a little less comfortable, but is nice and cool.
Human hair wigs: These wigs are the most expensive but are made with human hair instead of synthetic fibers.
Heat friendly fibers: These are wigs that can be washed and restyled with low heat so you can create whatever style you want with it.
Getting Used To Your New Wig
Ok, you’ve found your wig and are ready to start wearing it. There can be a lot of anxiety about wearing a wig out and about for the first time. Even I had some anxiety at first! Would people notice? Would people say anything?
There is definitely an adjustment period and it felt totally foreign to me at first with a wig on. I think it’s a good idea to just wear the wig at home for a while if you want. You are used to seeing yourself with your thinning hair and it will take time to get used to seeing yourself with more hair. But taking your time at home helps you get used to it and helps you learn how you want to style it.
It will also give you time to decide how you want to respond to any comments you might get. Most people I know didn’t say anything, and a lot of people ended up complimenting me on my hair without even knowing I was wearing a wig. Some even thought I went out and got extensions put in. It’s common for women to get extensions, or dye their hair and change things up and this is no different. I chose to be open about it, but you don’t have to be. You can choose how transparent or not you want to be about wearing helper hair.
In fact, if someone asks if that is your real hair, you can even say with confidence, “Yes, it is!” because it IS your hair now. You bought it. It’s yours! ~wink~wink~
But I hope you realize there is no shame in wearing wigs or any sort of helper hair and that you have a lot of options that can help you feel more cute and confident! I hope you will stay tuned because I have even more wig and hairloss tips and tricks we could go over! For me, personally, I have found that wearing wigs has actually been really fun. It makes it so easy to get ready in the morning and have the hair I’ve always dreamed of!
Be brave! Be confident! Wear the wig!
